About Us

Dean and Heather Hudson, native to NC, moved to Surf City 10 years ago from Burlington, NC. Parents to 2 girls and grandparents to 5 granddaughters, the Hudson’s have lived a very fulfilling life.

Heather has been an interior designer for the better part of her adult life. She is passionate about everything “home” and helping others with theirs.

Dean and Heather have enjoyed many projects together through Heather’s interior design business, from the mountains of Tennessee to the Florida Keys. Heather offers her designs services out of her shop at Checkered Periwinkle.

In July of 2022, an opportunity presented itself in the Topsail Island area. It entailed helping others with the décor and furnishings needs of their home. Dean and Heather have always been strong advocates of brick and mortar shops and shopping local. They decided it was time to embrace their vision and dream and took a leap of faith in opening the Checkered Periwinkle. They have designed an enjoyable shopping experience. A curated coastal collection, with a touch of southern hospitality.

Checkered Periwinkle offers a nice mix of new and vintage décor and furniture. You can also find an assortment of clothing and jewelry.

You may ask about the name “Checkered Periwinkle”. It’s the name of a seashell. Heather thought it was such a cute name!
